
I used the long, black screws that came with the shelf to attach the plank across the back. The side-supports have handy pre-drilled holes into which these are easily driven. I painted the sides of the rear of the plank so that I wouldn’t have to spray-paint the screw. Here’s a view from the top:

The other two boards followed suit. I found that around a 1/2″ gap between the boards was enough for patch cables, while it also left a little gap at the rear of the board for power:

The boards were temperamental and tended to split if I screwed them down too fast. I just filled in the cracks and covered the sunken screws with wood putty:
